« 3 - Mother »
Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 11:51PM The next morning Avalon sat on her deck over looking the lake yards ahead. She saw the golfers in the distance making their morning tee. The sun shone bright and Avalon was feeling quite pleased with herself. She leaned back in her chair allowing her skin soak up the warmth of the sun's rays.
As she came forward, she looked at the businss card Greg1 had given her. She smiled.
The phone rang. She wasn't sure if you wanted to answer it. She was in a warm cozy and fuzzy mood. She just wanted to imagine Greg1 doing things to her body that she would have never allow just any man to do. Nevertheless, she answered, snapping her out of her brief day dream.
"Hello." she said.
"Avalon?" the lady said from the other side of the phone.
"Hello mother. It's me."
"Well, I wasn't sure." she said.
Avalon's mother was a DC socialite. And she was the best one yet, having been married to three different political figures...a DC councilman, a State Senator, a Congressmen - Karen James Wenn Macon Finly was never to be out done. She knew of all the best political parties and how to come and in out of those political circles.
Avalon's relationship a strained one with her mother. And it had been like that for many years. Karen and her first husband Russell Wenn had adopted Stu, Avalon's brother, and Avalon when they were young.
"Have you spoken to Stu lately?" Karen asked.
"Actually no I haven't." Avalon said.
"I know you know not telling me the truth. He tells you to tell me that if I ask. I know how Stu works." she said.
"Hmmm...no actually mother...I have not spoken to Stu...I've been busy with my own life." Avalon said
Karen snickered. This pissed Avalon off.
Avalon always thought her mother had a self-rightousness about her. Karen liked to use Avalon to keep tabs on Stu. Stu had previously decided that during one of his mother's renowned white parties to have his coming out. This is really pleased Karen deep within. It was fashionable to have a child that was gay or on drugs. It made political families seem more real in the eyes of the voters, as if they went through the same pains and struggles as they did.
Karen liked to gage the political clout of those politicans that had media worthy coverage scandals. If it didn't raise to the level of the national news, Karen considered their clout to be subpar. Even though she never had a scandal that rose to that level.
"Well, missy since you're so busy with your life, I called to remind you about my black and white party this coming Saturday." Karen said.
"I remember." Avalon said even though she didn't.
"You must bring a date." Karen said flatly.
Avalon stared at Greg1's business card.
"What?" Avalon said. She paused. She gave out a slight huff. "I never bring a date to your stupid parties."
"And that's part of your problem? Are you gay like Stu? I mean you know I won't mind if you were one of those lesos."
"Lesos? What?" Avalon couldn't help but laugh at her mother. "I think you mean lesbian."
"Yes. One of those." Karen said not even realizing what she was talking about.
"Well, first of all I'm not one. And second, I think I can handle that...I mean bring a date." Avalon said.
"I don't mean for you to rent one either." Karen said.
Avalon's blood was beginning to boil. She hated discussing her love life with her mother. Her mother was harsh. She never had anything nice to say.
"I'm not going to rent one either. I do have someone in mind." Avalon said.
"Well good. See you Saturday." And with that Karen hung up the phone leaving Avalon no time to respond. As if her word was final.
Avalon tried to not give her mother any attention by not over reacting to her slick comments. But in the back of her mind she knew her mother was somewhat right. She needed to start stepping out on faith and trust that the right man would come.
She began to complate on asking Greg1. The conflict rose from her gut to her head. She thought, if I ask what will he say? Yes? No? Was it too soon?
